The Tennessee River at Shiloh

Last Tuesday Sarah, Jonathan and I went over to Pittsburg Landing to see the Tennessee River at 7 feet above flood stage.

Pittsburg Landing - There is usually a strip of grass, then several feet of rock before the river.

The water in the woods near the river is well over 10 feet deep!

This is what it usually looks like at this location. (This picture was taken last year.)

Here's another old picture from a different angle. This culvert is now completely under water...we couldn't even find where it went under!

Further down the river you can see fields that are flooded.

Below is a picture taken last year to compare to the picture above.

The whole time we were at the river huge gars were jumping out of the water! Jonathan estimates that they were 4 or 5 feet long!

While at Shiloh we went by to see the eagles. We hadn't seen them yet this year, but saw three of them this time. In this picture both of the parents are in the tree.

If you look closely you can see one of the eaglets peeking out of the nest.

Music

Our family played in Corinth on Saturday for a tour of old homes. This church building was built before the Civil War, so it was included in the tour.

Jackson, Tennessee (where we shop - about 50 miles from us) also had a lot of flooding.

For those familiar with Jackson, this is South Highland - between Market Place and Walgreens.

The flooding caused a lot of sink holes in the area. This one is in Jackson.

The bridge at Papa's house washed out during the storm. The culvert is still in place (Daddy and Anna are standing on it) but the water was rushing so fast that it washed out around the culvert.

A few damaged homes in Selmer

Flooding in McNairy County

This past weekend a tornado touched down in several places in McNairy County. Thankfully, we did not have any damage to our property except a lot of rain!

On our way to church Sunday morning we passed a lot of flooded fields.

We were very surprised at what we saw when we drove up to the building our Church is renting!

We are so thankful that no water was in the building!

Owl Creek, at the back of our farm, widened to about twice its usual size.

You can see in this picture how much wider the creek is. The tree in the middle is usually on the bank.

After several weeks of dry weather, we finally got some rain...lots of it!

Though very wet, our crops were not badly damaged.

The dry strip of ground surrounded by water is the only place in this side of the field where we had seeds planted. I thought it was amazing how everything else was flooded, but not our seeds! The morning after the storm there were 2 Canadian Geese swimming in this field. :)
